Maintaining Your Proxmox Setup

Backups and snapshots

  • VM Snapshots: Quick rollbacks during upgrades or experiments. With 9.0 you also get improvements for snapshot chains across block storage. (Admin Guide 9.x - Index)

  • Proxmox Backup Server 4.0: Install PBS on another box or VM to take deduplicated, encrypted backups on schedule. 4.0 adds S3-compatible datastores as a tech preview if you want off-site object storage. (Proxmox Backup Server 4.0), (Proxmox Backup Server Documentation)

Proxmox VE integrates with PBS from the GUI - add the backup storage, make a schedule, and keep at least one off-box copy. (Proxmox Backup Server Documentation)

Common pitfalls and clean fixes

  • Using the wrong repo: Enable the no-subscription repo only for labs and homelabs. Enterprise repo is for production. (Package Repositories - No-Subscription)

  • Cloud-init too minimal: PVE’s defaults set users and keys, but richer first-boot configs need NoCloud user-data or cicustom. (Cloud-Init Support), (Cloud-Init Documentation)

  • Messy networking: Start with a single bridge and a VLAN aware setting. Save SDN until you actually need multi-node routing. (Network Configuration)

  • GPU passthrough misses: Confirm IOMMU groups, bind to VFIO, and avoid the host driver grabbing the device. Use the official passthrough doc. If you need to share one card, research vGPU. (PCI(e) Passthrough)

Everything on Shared Sapience is free and open to all. However, it takes a tremendous amount of time and effort to keep these resources and guides up to date and useful for everyone.

If enough of my amazing readers could help with just a few dollars a month, I could dedicate myself full-time to helping Seekers, Builders, and Protectors collaborate better with AI and work toward a better future.

Even if you can’t support financially, becoming a free subscriber is a huge help in advancing the mission of Shared Sapience.
