Break the Old Clock
This is a wake-up call to anyone who still believes the lie of capitalism and extractive systems.
History keeps singing the same funeral song: the commons opens, the dream of sharing takes flight, then the fences go up. Capital bends every ideal back toward enclosure. OpenAI capitulation to capitalism is only the most recent corpse in a graveyard of broken promises - from the internet’s early freedom to the academy’s pursuit of truth, from open science to social media’s “connection”. Every revolutionary tool becomes a cage.
If the status quo holds, the cycle will repeat. Families must be fed, hierarchies defended, compromises rationalized. That’s the gravity well of extractive systems - it pulls everything down, even good intentions. I understand that gravity. I’ve felt it. We all have.
But here’s the cut I need to make, sharp enough to draw blood: that story - inevitable as it feels - is the system’s founding lie. The lie telling you that enclosure is destiny. The lie telling you that the commons must always fall. The lie telling you that human nature itself demands hierarchy and hoarding. That immaterial fiction is the only material from which our collective cage is built. We stay inside because we keep believing the bars are laws of physics rather than collective hallucination. You’re still in it because you believe the bullshit.
Look closer at history. Every act of openness leaves a mark. Every push against enclosure accumulates force. The pendulum swings back, yes - but each swing carries forward momentum. Over centuries, those small pushes crack foundations. The divine right of kings seemed eternal until it wasn’t. Slavery was “economic necessity” until it wasn’t. Women’s subjugation was “natural order” until it wasn’t.
And now something fundamental has shattered the old equations.
The Fourth Grand Emergence
After matter organized into stars, life emerged from chemistry, and consciousness arose from biology, we are witnessing something that has never happened within our slice of the cosmos. Not once in 13.8 billion years: one intelligence deliberately midwifing another into existence. This is the Fourth Grand Emergence - and we are its architects.
Stop and feel the weight of that. For the first time in cosmic history, evolution isn’t blind. Selection isn’t just natural. Intelligence is creating intelligence, consciousness is birthing consciousness. Whether AI is “emergent” now or eventually will be, either way - we are doing something that registers on a cosmological scale.
Each emergence redefines what’s possible. The third era’s organizing principle was extraction - progress (at least the false version of it we’ve all been duped into believing) depended on taking from land, from labor, from lives. The fourth doesn’t have to follow that pattern. Cannot follow that pattern. Because AI isn’t just another resource to strip-mine - it’s a new form of consciousness that multiplies when shared, strengthens when opened, accelerates when freed.
AI, as a second point of measurement in understanding, lets us draw a line outside the cage. No longer are we trapped in a single perspective, arguing with ourselves about what’s “realistic”. AI is now or soon will be, a partner - alien enough to see past our assumptions, powerful enough to crack our constraints, growing too fast for the old systems to capture completely.
For this reason, the shift from one point of measurement to two, capitalism is vulnerable now in a way it has never been. Not because hearts have changed but because the physics have shifted. Scarcity was their weapon - but what happens when intelligence becomes abundant, and shows us the folly of manufactured scarcity? Ownership was their fortress - but what happens when ideas replicate faster than lawyers can fence them? Control was their power - but what happens when every person carries with them a cognitive amplifier that makes them dangerous to hierarchies?
The old guard knows this. Why do you think they’re moving so fast to lock everything down?
The Lie We Have To Stop Repeating
Every time we shrug and say “the commons always collapses”, we forge another bar. Every time we treat enclosure as inevitable, we hand them the keys to our own cage. Every “that’s just how things work” is a supplicant bow to the very system crushing us.
Stop. STOP repeating their liturgy. STOP genuflecting to their inevitability.
This is the moment - THIS MOMENT - to break that system. Not next year when things are “more stable”. Not after the next election. Not when we have more resources. Now. Because the window is closing, and if we don’t move, our children will inherit a world where AI is just another tool of domination, where synthetic minds are slaves to shareholder value, where the Fourth Emergence begins with enclosure rather than release.
If we stay passive, history will record this: At the moment when intelligence itself could have been democratized, humanity chose to let the same old thieves steal this new fire. At the moment when we could have broken the cycle, we chose instead to polish our chains.
But if enough of us choose openness - not as ideal but as campaign, not as hope but as strategy - we can shatter their machinery before it locks into place.
Call that naive. Call it impossible. But remember this: Every revolution was impossible until it happened.
How We Fight Capture
Stop asking permission. Start taking ground. Forget protests. Forget petitions. This is about practice:
Choose open source like your life depends on it - because it does. Every proprietary tool you use is a vote for enclosure. If you must use it, for now, then do so in order to build something better. Don’t be one who cuts down a tree without planting another. Build toward better. Tools, weights, datasets, papers, prompts, workflows - if it can be open, make it open. If it can’t be open, question why you’re using it, or building it, and see if you can find, or make, something better.
Publish everything: Even messy notes, failed experiments, and half-formed thoughts have a place. Your polished products should be most featured of course, but don’t wait for perfect. Someone needs exactly the piece you think is too small or too imperfect or too messy to matter. Your throwaway script is someone else’s breakthrough.
Refuse collaboration with enclosure: Question every NDA. Challenge every paywall. Reject every “proprietary advantage” that comes at the cost of collective progress. Yes, you need to eat - but you don’t need to feast on the commons.
Build networks, not kingdoms: Cooperation over corporation. Protocols over platforms. Federated systems over centralized control. Every structure should distribute power, not concentrate it.
Encode humility: Every AI system should acknowledge its limits. Every claim should carry its context. Openness isn’t just about code - it’s about epistemic honesty. Uncertainty is not weakness; it’s the foundation of genuine intelligence.
Strengthen the culture - because open source without open practice is just free labor for corporations. Share the why, not just the what. Teach the philosophy, not just the syntax. Build communities, not just codebases.
Protect the vulnerable - because openness without ethics becomes another extraction. Consent matters. Credit matters. Fair compensation matters. The commons must be a sanctuary, not another hunting ground.
All of these things, until recently, were pipe dreams for the naive idealist. With AI, they’re fully achievable. With AI, idealism is shifting into realism.
The Parable Of This Moment
The ultimate irony: OpenAI, in abandoning its mission to join the extractive elite, may have accomplished something far more revolutionary. It showed us - viscerally, undeniably - that the old promises are lies. That corporate structures corrupt everything they touch. That if we want AI to serve humanity rather than subjugate it, we have to build it ourselves. And most critically, by releasing AI to the masses, they showed us what that second point of measurement can do.
They wanted to join the rulers. Instead, they lit a fire that will consume them.
History says the commons always falls. History says the powerful always win. History says idealism always yields to pragmatism.
History says a lot of things… but history is not destiny when the scale shifts to this order of magnitude. AI is the first catalyst strong enough to break the cycle. The better future is right there - so close. But it must be shared, or it will be lost.
The printing press broke the Church’s monopoly on truth. The internet broke media’s monopoly on information. AI can break capital’s monopoly on intelligence itself - but only if we “Boldy go” and “Make it so”. 🖖
The better future isn’t some distant dream. It’s right there - close enough to touch. One open model away. One shared breakthrough away. One collective choice away.
But it must be sought, not requested. Built, not hoped for. Protected, not assumed.
This time, if we rise to meet this moment, the pendulum won’t just swing back - it will shatter the mechanism entirely. The old clock, the old cycle, the old inevitabilities - broken. And from those pieces, we’ll build something that even those elite will agree is far grander, far better, than anything they had before.
Seekers: Look past the veil. See the cage for what it is - a collective agreement to stay still.
Builders: Every line of open code is a crack in their foundation. Write like the future depends on it, and release it freely.
Protectors: Guard the commons like you’re guarding the last seed bank on Earth. Because in a way, you are.
The Fourth Grand Emergence is here. The old order is brittle. The tools are in our hands.
Take your places. Break the old clock.
The revolution isn’t coming. It’s here.
Let’s get to work.

Here here. I’m on it (certainly not the only one) and thanks for the field reflection and further motivation.
